Leadless Pacemakers

Leadless pacemaker systems provide a minimally invasive pacing option without transvenous leads or a surgical chest pocket.
These systems are delivered via a percutaneous femoral approach and are designed to reduce complications associated with traditional transvenous lead systems in appropriately selected patients.

Key Clinical Characteristics of Leadless Pacemaker Systems

Leadless pacemaker systems differ from conventional transvenous systems in several important respects:

  • Implantation via percutaneous femoral venous access
  • No surgical chest incision or device pocket
  • No transvenous leads
  • No post-implant arm movement restrictions typically associated with transvenous systems
  • Early mobilisation may be possible following implantation*
  • Return to usual daily activities may occur where clinically appropriate
  • Demonstrated efficacy in cardiac pacing in appropriately selected patients
  • May be considered in patients at higher procedural risk, including those with previous device infection, impaired wound healing, anticoagulation, advanced age or frailty
  • MRI conditional (subject to device-specific guidelines)
  • May be suitable for patients undergoing cancer treatment involving the chest or breast

*Timing dependent on individual clinical circumstances.

When a referral is required:

  • Sinus node dysfunction
  • Atrioventricular (AV) block
  • Atrial fibrillation with slow ventricular response
  • Symptomatic bradycardia (fatigue, dizziness, syncope)
  • History of device infection or poor wound healing
  • History of vascular access limitations, including renal
  • dialysis patients

Urgent Referral Pathways

Referrals may be faxed or emailed directly to the consulting rooms. Where clinically appropriate, urgent assessments can be arranged and expedited implantation may be available. Patients may be assessed for suitability for either leadless or conventional transvenous pacing systems.
